The first closure will affect the A692 northbound entry slip road on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May. Drivers will be able to follow a clearly signed diversion through junction 67 Coal House.
The weekend closures will continue until Sunday 21 June, with traffic being diverted through junction 67 Coal House or junction 70 Dunston Road.
Only one slip road will be affected each day and drivers are being advised to add an extra 5 to 10 minutes to their journey times.
Once the scheme is complete, almost 4 miles of the A1 will be widened to 3 lanes in both directions from the Coal House junction up to the Metro Centre junction.
