News story: Cyber defence: securing against the insider threat

Frazer-Nash Consultancy received CDE funding to develop a system to monitor for insider threat attacks on control and instrumentation-type systems.

These systems can be found in propulsion, weapons, environmental and other platform systems as well as non-military applications such as power-distribution systems and transport networks.

A typical application scenario for this type of system would be the addition of a network monitoring node to a legacy platform system. This will monitor network traffic and identify any anomalous behaviours that may be due to an insider threat. This information will then be passed back to a local or remote monitoring system, which will indicate that anomalous activity has been detected.

Frazer Nash is hoping to develop this work in a number of ways, including the exploration of application networks to provide application test information, and looking at baseline performance of the system on deployable hardware.

Will McGeehin, Senior Consultant at Frazer-Nash says:

We have used CDE funding to develop a completely new concept that we would not have been able to explore otherwise. This has proved to be applicable in a wider context; we are keen to explore this wider use
