The work will be taking place along sections of the motorway between junction 4 at Blackburn South and junction 10 at Padiham.
Highways Agency project manager John Lyssejko said:
This is routine repair, maintenance and improvement work and we will be doing all we can to ensure it is delivered with as little inconvenience to motorway users as possible.
The improvements include:
- renewing or refreshing all carriageway lane and slip road white lines and all road studs between junction 7 at Rishton and junction 10
- carrying out similar work between junction 4 and junction 7
- repairing slip road lighting at junction 8 at Accrington with a full lighting renewal scheme for the junction to follow
The slip road lighting repairs should be completed by the end of next week with the rest of the work completed by the end of March.
The work between junction 7 and junction 10 incorporates the motorway ‘full switch off zone’ where main carriageway lighting was switched off in March 2011 as part of a national Highways Agency initiative to contribute to cutting carbon emissions. The carriageway and slip roads will benefit from thermoplastic embossed road marking. This is a relatively new treatment which is designed to boost nighttime visibility in wet weather.
