Highways Agency Project Manager, Mark Saunders, said:
Our work on the A14 between Histon and Girton is in the final stages of construction. We had expected to substantially remove the roadworks in time for Easter, but extra pressures experienced this weekend, including high winds and the breakdown of a piece of equipment on site, has delayed this work by around a week.
This means the additional lanes won’t be open until the end of next week. We appreciate this is disappointing news for road users, and we are sorry for any disruption it causes to people’s journeys.
To help people making journeys over the Easter bank holiday, we will suspend work between Thursday 2 April and 7 April.
We are working hard to ensure drivers experience the benefits of the new road layout with the additional lanes at the end of next week.
The scheme will be finished by early June.
Mark added:
Opening the extra lanes is an important step in finishing work on this project, and drivers should notice a difference to their journeys when it happens.
Other work will continue until early June, which will include street lighting work – for which a 50mph limit will be in place – and fully resurfacing the road between junctions 31 and 32, which we’ve added to the programme and will be completed using overnight closures.
Some finishing off works and landscaping means scheme completion could be early in June.
